High Tide 2012 - Brunswick Georgia - Spring Break

Shazam Women's Ultimate
The sweet Georgia air filled Shazam’s lungs as they began the grueling three-day tournament of High Tide. Injuries plagued our team as the considerably smaller squad played together for seven games.
The first game was a rough start, as an escaped convict created traffic to the fields and Shazam only had about five minutes to warm up. It was a rematch against Allegheny, and this time they got the advantage after having been on the fields and sufficiently warmed up for hours. Shazam’s two points were from Rachel Moser to Marlie Somers and Griffy Tanenbaum to Rachel. Marlie got a handblock, Rachel got hot Ds, and Katie Golden and Becky Chhay each laid out! It was a fun match despite the 7-2 loss.
Despite being better warmed up for the second game, Shazam lost 13-0 to a nationals-level team from Steven’s Point in Wisconsin. Shazam still played amazing defense, though, with nearly every player causing a turnover. The third game, against Smith B, was a much better game. The loss was 7-6, as Kim Haines, Zara Cadoux, Becky, and Katie each threw for points, with Rachel, Hanna, and Kei catching them. Again, the time limit to the games prevented a change in the outcome of the game.
The second day, Shazam arrived to the fields on time but were still playing without one of their captains, and with most players sore or injured. The first game was against Amherst College. Shazam ultimately lost 12-3, with the three points being thrown by Marlie and Griffy, and being caught by Chloe and Katie. Over half of our girls had active Ds during the game!
Next up was Kalamazoo College. It was a sad loss at 7-9, especially since Shazam was beginning to turn the table as the horn to announce the end of the game was blown. Griffy, Marlie, Chloe Argilan, Hanna, and Kei each threw for points, with Marlie, Rachel, Chloe, Maggie, Kim, Griffy, and Natalie Clagett catching them.
The next game was a hard fought battle against UMass Amherst, ultimately lost 13-2. They were a very experienced team, and Shazam didn’t give up until the very end. Marlie and Kei threw for points, while Maggie and Clagett caught them. Rachel, Hanna, and Griffy had particularly good defense during the game, causing ten turnovers in some points.
The final day was an early start against Colby. It was a very spirited game, although most everyone had their eyes on the beach after lunch. Shazam ultimately lost 13-2, and everyone played really well. The other team was very spirited despite the early start and the already sweltering heat.
Everyone learned a lot over the week, with some cutters getting experience handling while also improving their cuts. The spirit award went to Katie Golden for her great improvements on the field as well as her ability to keep positive even when things looked sour for Shazam. Every day, the flow of the game improved as the day went on. Shazam is now looking forward to sectionals April 14-15!
