NutBuster VII, Indiana, Pennsylvania
Day 1: March 3, 2012
Conditions: High winds made playing this day nearly impossible. There had also been large amounts of precipitation in the days preceding the tournament, so the field was nothing short of swampy. There were puddles in the end-zones and winds that would not relent, traveling from end-zone to end-zone instead of creating a cross wind for players. Every step compacted the earth, which was eerily loose. But we played on.
Game 1: Case Western Reserve v. Shazam. L, 13-0
This was a hard-fought game. The weather made it hard to do much of anything, and Case threw some different zones that were unfamiliar to the team. Instead of the standard three person cup, Case put five people in the cup, preventing any swings or up-line throws. Unfortunately, by the time we figured out how we could do anything against these tricky girls, the game had almost wrapped up. When we put a fourth handler back, it was only the wind we had to battle, as we could handle the cup much better.
Highlights:
Good spirit, analyzing the defense and making adjustments
Game 2: Allegheny v. Shazam, W, 5-6
Allegheny was coming off a grueling loss to Messiah college that went long past the expected end time. Shazam was coming off a long sit on the sidelines, so we decided to warm up before facing off. Teams altered points, neither team scoring an upwind point but Shazam winning the time battle and getting the final point. We successfully got past their poach in the lane, even though the high winds largely prevented upwind hucks. Both teams enjoyed themselves, and Shazam saw clearly where points of improvements need to happen.
Point breakdown:
1: Goal, Marlie to Heather
3: Goal, Heather to Kim
5: Goal, Marlie to Rachel; Ds by Kim, Rachel, and Hannah Banana; hot lay by Heather
6: Ds by Heather, Hannah Banana, and Krizia; nice read by Marlie
7: Goal, Marlie to Heather
8: D by Heather
9: Goal, Marlie to Rachel
11: Goal, Heather to Rachel
Game 3: Cornell B v. Shazam, L, 4-2
This game was rough for the entire team, as we could not beat the difficult winds or the fierce adversaries. The first point lasted for at least ten or fifteen minutes, Shazam fighting until the last to keep the Roses from getting an easy score. Krizia sacrificed her well-being as she laid for a disc, only to call injury and be taken out of the play due to her injured shoulder. The game was tough, but it was fun!
Point breakdown:
1: D by Caitlin
3: Goal, Heather to Kei
5: Goal, Heather to Hanna
Game 4, Messiah v. Shazam, L, 5-4
Shazam came onto the field sore and willing to stop playing, but decided pre-game to instead play a shortened game against Messiah. First one to 5 points won, and since they started with the disc, they were the first to accomplish that goal. The teams again traded points, the team going downwind having the advantage. As badly as Shazam wanted an upwind point, the winds proved too treacherous to provide an opportunity. This game was used as a fun tension relaxer, as the weather put everyone in a bad mood. Plays weren’t called, and players simply ran to where they thought they would do well on the field. It worked surprisingly well!
Point breakdown:
2: Goal, Marlie to Maggie
4: Goal, Someone?? to Kim
6: Goal, Heather? to Marlie?
7: Ds by Heather and Marlie
8: Goal, Someone?? To Heather; D by Kei
9: Ds by Heather
Day 2: March 4, 2012
Conditions: The fields that were previously swamps had turned to ice. The wind had slowed a little, but still blew downfield. It was beyond cold, and snowing.
Game 1: IUP v. Shazam, W, 5-0
With the parting of Caitlin, Hannah Banana, and Krizia, Shazam was ready to play savage seven, until Maggie got badly hurt in the morning. That placed us at six players, and IUP agreed to play 6 v. 6 and a shortened game. Shazam scored 5 in a row, truly shining. We threw a cup, and then went man on the three players downfield, making it difficult for them to get open. IUP had great looks and got down field, but failed to score. The game was extremely fun, as Shazam played well in the best weather of the tournament.
Point breakdown:
1: Goal, Marlie to Kei
2: Goal, Heather to Hanna
3: Goal, Heather to Rachel; two great Ds by Kei
4: Goal, Heather to Marlie
5: Goal, Marlie to Rachel; D by Rachel – Rachel got bookends!
Places to improve:
Turn vertical cuts into diagonal cuts
Dump fakes
Crashing the cup
Individual Highlights:
Fantastic cuts by Rachel
Crazy grabs by Hanna
Awesome field awareness by Kei
Nice bids by Krizia, Heather, Hanna, Kim, and Rachel
Great Ds by Hannah Banana, Heather, Kei, and Caitlin
Shut-down dump defense by Maggie
Nice handling by Heather and Marlie
Great ISO calls by the whole team!
Unbelievable spirit by everyone!!
