Thursday, December 8, 2011 marks a great day.
What makes this a great day you ask? Well, curious reader, listen to my story and you shall find out.
Around 2007, UMBC had an unofficial Women's Ultimate team called "Clamjammers." For some unknown reason (because I lack historical knowledge), Clamjammers disbanded. When Clamjammers ceased to exist the lovely Ultimate ladies of UMBC traveled along side Booya gents to coed scrimmages, games, and tournaments. It wasn't until 2010 that a new unofficial Women's team appeared: "Booya Shawtees". Made on the spur for Sectionals Spring 2010, the reformation of "Booya Shawtees" started to roll. It started as a dream, one verbally passed around as a cool idea; then eureka! What compliments Booya better than Shazam!? Fall 2010, Shazam created her first batch of Women members. Little by little, Shazam grew the strength to stand on her own. Tourney after tourney, she pressed her existence into College Ultimate. Slowly making her way through the East coast, she was recognized almost everywhere but her own home campus. Thursday, December 8, 2011 is the day that Shazam took matters into her own hands and made a great leap. Competing against dog-eat-dog clubs, Thursday, December 8, 2011, Shazam presented herself in front of UMBC officials. What resulted from this courageous act? The prized privilege of being recognized as an official Women's Ultimate Frisbee club at UMBC. One small step for Shazam; one giant leap for Women's Ultimate.
For all this to happen during such a small time period, I'm excited to see Shazam's future potentials bloom.
Congrats Shazam. You are officially a Women's Ultimate Frisbee Club at UMBC! (wooo!~)
Thanks go out to: Shazamians, Booyagins, our Coaches Zara, Dennin, and Clarkson, our supporters, and UMBC.
